Safety Statement & Risk Assessment

Health and Safety (H and S) and Insurance related issues are presenting major challenges for clubs. Clubs are obliged to have a H and S statements in place and it is also GAA national policy.

Why does your club need to produce a Safety Statement?
  • Under the Safety, Health & Welfare Act 2005 every employer/club must prepare a Safety Statement
  • GAA National Policy Requirement
  • Funding Requirement
  • Highlights the duties of employees/volunteers/contractors to co-operate with health & safety practices
  • It should be updated regularly to take account of changing circumstances

What is a Safety Statement?

It is a document which should include:

  • ŸDeclaration signed by Club management
  • ŸHazards identified & risks assessed
  • ŸThe protective and preventive measures taken – safeguards taken
  • ŸPlans and procedures for dealing with emergencies / serious or imminent
  • ŸHighlights the duties of employees/volunteers/contractors to co-operate with health & safety practices
  • ŸThe names of persons required to perform tasks pursuant to the safety statement – Club Structure

What is a Hazard?

ŸA Hazard is anything that can cause harm to a person, place or the environment

How do we conduct a Risk Assessment?

  • Identify the hazards
  • Decide who might be harmed and how?
  • Evaluate the risks and decide on precautions
  • Record your findings and implement them
  • Review your assessment and update if necessary
